Land acknowledgement

Indigenous justice is a continued journey of the Presbyterian Church in Canada.

St. Andrew’s Newmarket acknowledges the hurt, pain, and harms caused by colonization, and works toward truth and reconciliation. We are reminded of this commitment each Sunday when we read our land acknowledgement.

We recognize that the land where we gather for worship belongs to God, as does all of creation. We also recognize that this land has been in the care of Indigenous peoples long before the settlers of European descent claimed ownership and displaced those for whom it was home. St. Andrew’s Newmarket would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to those whose territory we reside on – the First Peoples of the Williams Treaties First Nations who are: the Mississaugas of Alderville, Curve Lake, Hiawatha, Scugog Island; and the Chippewas of Beausoleil, Rama, and Georgina Island and we would like to thank them for sharing this land. As we pursue our goals to honour truth and work toward reconciliation, we lament this injustice in our history and commit ourselves to just and respectful relationships within our congregation and neighbourhood.
